STAIRWAY OF THE CONSTITUTION
Leads to the the Captains Quarters

The tablet (bronze plaque) on each riser running from bottom to top indicates the order in which the States ratified the Constitution. On Monday, 17 May 1937, the dedication of these plaques took place andwas officially designated as "The Stairway of the Constitution." In May of 1968, Captain Ralph De Stefano arranged for and had installedthe flag of the respective State in place on each step. In 1992 the flags were replaced at the time of the restoration and renewal of the Museum/Armory. The States and the Dates of Ratification are:

NEW JERSEY----- 18 December 1787
GEORGIA----- 2 January 1788
CONNECTICUT----- 9 January 1788
MASSACHUSETTS----- 6 February 1788
MARYLAND----- 18 April 1788
SOUTH CAROLINA----- 23 May 1788
NEW HAMPSHIRE----- 21 June 1788
VIRGINIA 25----- June 1788
NEW YORK 26----- July 1788
NORTH CAROLINA----- 21 November 1788
RHODE ISLAND----- 29 May 1790

The Continental Congress, on September 13, 1788, proclaimed the ratification by nine states and ordered the convening of the new government on March 4, 1789.
