IMPORTANT DATES THROUGH AHAC HISTORY

1637 - Petition to the General Court of Massachusetts to establish a military organization

1638 - Charter granted to form the Military Company of Massachusetts

1659 - Company uses new Town House as its Headquarters through the Will of Captain Robert Keayne

1686 - Governor of New England Edmund Andros disrupts life and the government of Boston, including the work of the Company

1690 - First time the Company is called the "Artillery Company"

1711 - The Town House burns and is replaced by the Town and Province House, now called the Old State House

1737 - Company referred to as this "ancient and honorable artillery company"

1742 - A new market building with a meeting room is built on the dock area, funded by Peter Faneuil and named Faneuil Hall in his honor

1746 - The Company moves to Faneuil Hall

1775 - The War of Independence begins on April 19th and many members are called to duty in their respective militias which later is known as the Continental Army

1776 - The Declaration of Independence is read from the balcony of the Old State House by a member of the Company, a tradition that carries on today [July 4th Parade]

1787 - Shays Rebellion finds that the Company is the only Boston militia ready and equipped to go West

1805 - Faneuil Hall is quadrupled in size, adding a fourth floor drill hall for the militia and the Company

1812 - War with Britain finds Company members inducted into Federal Service

1847 - War with Mexico finds Brigadier General Caleb Chase, a member of the Company, recognized for distinguished service

1861 - Civil War draws many members to Federal service

1885 - Members of the Company escort President Chester Arthur at laying of cornerstone of Washington Monument

1886 - First anniversary of Washington Monument begins an annual celebration now called Presidents' Day

1896 - Many members of the Company sail to London for a visit with the Honorable Artillery Company of London

1903 - The Honorable Artillery Company visits the Company in America in a gala event

1917 - Many members of the Company are called to duty for World War I

1937 - Company members take part in 400th anniversary of the Honorable Artillery Company of London

1941 - World War II sees many members of the Company called to war; in 1943 members hold a War Bond campaign that raises enough money to buy two bombers for the European Theater

1975 - The Bicentennial of the United States is celebrated with Company members serving as official escort to Queen on her visit to Boston

1988 - The 350th Anniversary of the Company welcomes members from the Honorable Artillery Company of London

2003 - Some 300-plus members of the Honorable Artillery Company of London visited Boston for June Day in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of its maiden visit to Massachusetts

2006 - Members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Compay travel to the Vatican to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Swiss Guard. The Swiss Guard is the oldest charted military organization in the world. Visit news page for downloadable articles on this historic event!
